Wrote this for 2nd graders. >.> Had to be on an animal of my choice, but had to include biology themes. Give opinions/comments/feedback, but remember that this is for kindergarteners through 2nd graders.

Bob’s Trip

When Bob the Panda woke up one early morning in spring, and the sun was high in the sky, shining on his black and white fur. He had a feeling in his stomach, one of extreme hunger. Bob had not eaten since the night before, so he went to look in the refrigerator for something to fill his stomach. To Bob’s dismay, the refrigerator was empty! He searched high and low through all the cabinets in the kitchen, and then through all the secret places in the house where he had hidden food. Bob couldn’t, however, find anything anywhere in the house.

Bob decided that today, he would go to the grocery store to buy food for him to eat. Luckily, the store he was going to was open in the morning, and it offered a variety of goods for Bob to buy. Bob got on all four of his paws and slowly walked to the store on the hill, which was a short distance from his house.

When Bob got to the store, he recognized a few of the people there. Among them was his friend, Billy the Bear. “Hi Billy," said Bob, “did you finally finish hibernating for the winter?”
“Oh hi Bob, it’s a surprise to see you here today. Yeah, I woke up from my winter slumber just the other day. What about you, did you hibernate over the winter as well?” asked Billy.
“No,” replied Bob, “I’m a giant panda, and giant pandas don’t hibernate during the winter.”
“Oh, that’s interesting,” said Billy, “As you know, most bears hibernate during the winter to conserve energy. I guess you’re just a little different from the rest of us.”
“I guess I am,” answered Bob, and then he said his goodbyes to Billy and began to search for food, as his hunger had not subsided yet.

“Hello Bob,” exclaimed a voice from behind Bob, “What would you like today?”
Bob turned around to find the owner of the grocery store, Mrs. Red, holding a package frozen meat in her hands. Mrs. Red was a Red Panda, an animal that is more closely related to raccoons than to bears. “How about some of this meat,” asked Mrs. Red, pointing to the package in her paw.

“No thank you,” replied Bob, “unlike other bears, I rarely eat meat. However, on special occasions, I will have eggs, fish, or insects. Do you happen to have vegetables in this store?”

“Yes,” answered Mrs. Red, “The vegetables and fruits are in the back of the store. Are you looking for anything in particular?”

“Why yes, do you happen to have any bamboo shoots or leaves here? I just love the taste of bamboo,” said Bob excitedly.

“Let me get the bamboo for you,” said Mrs. Red as she walked to the back of the store.

A few minutes later, she walked back with a handful of bamboo stems. “Here you go,” she said as she handed Bob the bamboo.

“Thank you,” said Bob as he paid for the vegetables.

As Bob handed Mrs. Red the money for the bamboo, Mrs. Red looked in amazement at Bob’s paw. “Why, what an unusual paw you have. Compared to mine, you have a thumb and five fingers,” she said.

Bob looked at his paws, and to his amazement, he really did have a thumb and five fingers. “I guess I don’t really notice these things, as I’ve always had them. I’ve just never noticed the difference, between my paw and the paw of others. This ‘extra’ thumb acts as a support when I grasp bamboo while eating.”

However, what Bob didn’t know was that this thumb was very special. Only giant pandas had developed this type of thumb, making them different from the rest of the bears.

After Bob paid for his bamboo, he returned home and sat down. Bob took the bamboo in his hands and started eating his favorite meal, enjoying the sun as it beat down upon his fur.

What a day it'll be when all bears talk and act friendly toward each other.
