This prequel to my favourite series is very innovative because you can control 2 characters at once and drop items anywhere you please, but it is still not as great as the remake. Some gamers don't even feel the need to play through the prequel. It mentions a bit about Raccoon City, Rockfort Island and Sheena Island, but nothing else interesting happens afterwards.
The main characters are the rookie police medic Rebecca Chambers and the convicted killer Billy Coen. Both of these protagonists meet by chance when they board a huge train, that was previously attacked by these strange leeches that turned everybody into zombies. They discover they have to stop the train before it crashes. Anyway, the train section only lasts about an hour, then our heroes are off to a huge research facility. Of course it feels like a blatant copy of the first game, although the rooms are all very different.
The 2 heroes depend on each other because Billy is stronger and Rebecca is the only person who can mix herbs. Plus, if one of them dies, the game ends.
As it turns out, series regulars William Birkin and Albert Wesker had a man named James Marcus murdered after he refused to hand over his work. William Birkin met the same fate in Resident Evil 2 so you can see where they got the idea. However, Marcus is resurrected by his leeches and scatters the T-Virus into the mansions, explored in the prequel and the remake.
I enjoyed Resident Evil Zero, but it was a bit lousy for being a prequel. It wasn't a bad game, but it could have revealed more about Umbrella and the destruction of the S.T.A.R.S. teams. In my opinion, Richard Aiken should have been a supporting character for Rebecca Chambers.
