This is a brilliant movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger at his best. He would go on to star in other great blockbuster movies such as Predator and Total Recall, but this movie remains one of his eternal classics. Arnold is a very underrated actor in my view. Linda Hamilton is also exceptionally intriguing as Sarah Connor, the lady Arnold attempts to eliminate before her son John can be born.
The Terminator of the title is a robotic killer from the year 2029 where machines run riot. He is then sent to 1984 in Los Angeles to kill the woman who has an important role in saving the human population. However, a young rebel called Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) is sent to protect her at all costs and to ensure John's birth comes about as well.
James Cameron did a great job with this film. Considering he thought up the idea from a sick bed and had it rejected that many times, it is a great credit to him. He then made other memorable movies including Aliens, True Lies, Titanic and of course, he also directed the first Terminator sequel.
The film is very outdated now, but it has some of the greatest visual effects and car chases I've ever seen. There's one particularly great scene where human skulls are being crushed by giant robots that attack the human rebels who are struggling to survive. I don't know why I haven't got this on DVD by now. Apparently it has some deleted scenes worth seeing.
